The Vineyards
The diversity of soil formation and the variety of microclimates that characterise the territory of the Euganean Hills They have allowed us to find the right location for vineyards suitable for producing concentrated, tannic, aromatic, and mineral grapes. Southern-facing vineyards produce red grapes, such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, while in the lands with south-west exposure vines are grown Pinot Noir and a small vineyard of Chardonnay.
The age of the vineyards varies from 9 to 28 years and they are grown on mainly calcareous soils. Only a small part of the vineyard is Cabernet Franc It is grown on red clay soil formed by the leaching of the surrounding hills.
Due to the poor fertility of these soils, two training systems are adopted: "guyot" in the varieties where the basal buds differ only in wood and "spurred cordon" in the remaining varieties. The dense planting pattern, without exaggeration, allows the cultivation of 5,500/6,000 vine stocks per hectareOur production goal is to obtain one bottle of wine from each vine. The vineyards are located at an average altitude of 150 meters above sea level. The inter-rows are grassed in an alternating pattern to allow the vine roots to better explore the soil and reduce evaporation of the scarce rainfall typically found in this area.
In the municipality of Baone, in the Valle San Giorgio area, entering a small valley, on the right you come across some hills that were formed by the uplift of the seabed caused by volcanic phenomena. The soil has a high limestone content, so much so that it was previously used for mining for the production of lime and cement.
In 1990, when the property was purchased, the land was prepared with practicable slopes for planting vineyards. In the "Pianora" area, the seabed is exposed, the soil is infertile, and unit yields are very low. The total area dedicated to vineyards here is 4.5 hectares, part of which is cultivated with Merlot, part a Cabernet Franc and part to Pinot Noir. Going down to the lower part, due to the leaching of the higher lands over the years, we find a soil made up of red clays, suitable for the cultivation of later varieties, such as the Cabernet Franc.
